SOAS announced a five-year Sanctuary Scholarships scheme to improve access to higher education for displaced people. The scholarships support six undergraduate and one postgraduate student who are displaced and therefore cannot access student finance.
Hundreds of SOAS alumni, staff, students and friends of the School took a stand to support displaced people. SOAS covered the tuition fees for seven scholars each year for five years. Thanks to the support of the SOAS community, we raised an incredible £350,000 to support living costs and help displaced people through their journey into higher education. This included three generous offers of accommodation from our alumni, who opened their homes and hosted our Sanctuary Scholars.
Since the launch of the SOAS Sanctuary Scholarships, twenty one students have benefitted from your generosity.
By making a gift today, you can continue to help a student like Mariam access education and break down the barriers many displaced people face.
"I have limited leave to remain which meant there was no way I could afford studying. When I found out I had been awarded the scholarship to study MA Law, I called my mother in Nigeria and she was ecstatic. My family are so proud of me and as we call law students and legal practitioners in Nigeria, now they call me “The Law”. Don’t ask me why we do that!" - Mariam Otaiku (LLM 2018) - Sanctuary Scholarship Recipient
